MacArthur Disability Services

Macarthur Disability Services (MDS) has now been operating in the Macarthur Region for 21 years. Originally developed in response to the 1981 “Year of the Disabled”, MDS has a history of identifying and responding to the needs of people with disabilities, their families and carers.

MDS has become a dynamic team of workers able to quickly respond to changing circumstances. This allows a flexibility of service delivery responsive to changing needs.

The importance of planning has increased as MDS has grown. Clear directions have been set to ensure that MDS remains true to the organisation’s visions and continues to operate within stated organisational values.

In light of MDS innovative approach and commitment to community and people with disabilities, a training centre was opened in 2008 which offers two large fully equipped training rooms and qualified trainers with a variety of experience in management, disabilities, mental health and other valued vocational occupations.

Anne Thorn, General Manager of MDS said that “this innovative new training centre will focus on workplace training in the community in a way that is efficient and cost effective for employers.   Certificate courses in training and assessment, disability services, aged care and community services will be offered. The centre will provide flexible training giving participants options such as face to face tutorials, distance education, e-learning or a mixture of all three.”

MacArthur Disability Services is a non profit organisation that relies on sponsorship and donations. Due to MDS ability to think outside the square, a new initiative to offer training services to businesses was launched that would provide training to the corporate sector within the sponsorship catchment area. MDS identified that business want to sponsor a good cause but would like some return for their money other than community responsibility. MDS will now offer training services to south western businesses within the sponsorship catchment area so that organisations receive value for money support through the use of MDS training services.
